Oral Surgery for Dentures

oral surgery for denturesSometimes when a tooth or several teeth are damaged or loosened to the point of limited functionality, Dr. White will recommend that they be removed. In this case, there are a few options available to you. Dental implants are a successful solution to tooth loss if there is adequate jawbone mass to secure an implant in place. If this is not the case, Dr. White may recommend partial or complete dentures, depending on the number of teeth to be extracted.

If you decide to proceed with dentures, there are two options available to you:

Traditional Dentures

The first option available to you would be to extract the affected teeth and wait for several weeks to months for the affected area to heal completely before making a denture to replace your teeth. This will allow for a more comfortable recovery, but many do not choose this option because of the difficulties associated with missing teeth.

Immediate Dentures

The second option is called an immediate denture. This alternative involves the placement of dentures immediately following the extraction, which allows you to have the aesthetic and functional benefits of the denture while the site is healing. Although some discomfort is to be expected with this method, this can usually be moderated with pain medication and the denture itself actually serves as a bandage over the extraction area while it heals.
