Oral Pathology

Dr. White officeOral Pathology involves the diagnoses and study of diseases that are found in the mouth, jaw, temporomandibular joints, facial muscles and skin around the mouth. As it pertains to dentistry and oral surgery, oral pathology often relates to issues such as gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gingivitis is a form of periodontal (gum) disease, which can affect the teeth, gums and tissue surrounding the teeth. Gingivitis can occur when hard-to-remove bacterial plaque (tartar) causes inflammation of the mouth, leading to red, swollen and/or bleeding gums. Receding, sometimes tender gums can also be symptom, as well as bad breath. Treatment for gingivitis can depend on the severity of the disease, but it is possible to treat. It is important to see your dentist to learn how to act quickly and ensure good oral health moving forward.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis, which is when the gums pull away from the teeth causing pockets to form. Those pockets then become places for bacteria to gather. When this occurs, the bone and tissues surrounding the teeth can begin to break down leading to loose teeth that may need to be removed. Other symptoms may include persistent bad breath, painful chewing or red, swollen, tender and/or receding gums.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with Dr. White by completing our online contact form or by calling 303.344.2705.
