Reconstructive Jaw Surgery

jaw surgery stationReconstructive jaw surgery refers to the surgical correction of a significant defect to the maxillofacial bone structure. This can result from many different causes, such as a serious head injury, birth defect or oral cancer. When the bone structure is damaged, a reconstruction or rebuilding of the skeletal structure of the jaw is sometimes necessary to return the mouth and face to normal function and appearance. If left untreated, maxillofacial deformities can lead to poor oral health, diminished self-confidence and even depression when severe. Rest assured that Dr. White and our team of experts are here to help you determine the right solution for your specific condition.

Who is a good candidate for jaw reconstructive surgery?

Although each case is different, some common candidates for reconstructive jaw surgery include patients who are experiencing:

  • A protruding or misaligned jaw
  • An open bite (space between the teeth when the jaw is closed)
  • Bone loss due to oral cancer
  • Problems biting, chewing or swallowing food normally
  • Serious trauma to the jaw structure
  • Speech difficulties
  • Chronic jaw pain

What to Expect

Reconstructive jaw surgery can usually be performed entirely in your mouth so visible scarring is generally minimal. The exact procedure can vary greatly depending on your unique condition. Generally, Dr. White makes cuts in the jawbones and moves them into the correct position. Dr. White will then secure them in place with screws and bone plates. If you have experienced bone loss due to cancer, disease or severe trauma, a surgeon will sometimes remove a small amount of bone from your leg or rib to strengthen an area.
