Bone Grafting

What is Bone Grafting?bone grafting for periodontal disease

Bone grafting, also known as regenerative surgery, is a treatment used to replace bone or supporting tissue that has been lost. This loss can result from a number of conditions but the most common is periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is an advanced stage of gum disease wherein the gum tissue around the teeth begins to erode and the supporting bone around the roots is weakened. Periodontal disease can cause loose teeth, and if not properly treated, will result in the need for tooth extraction. Bone grafting is used to coax the bone and tissues around your teeth into regrowing so that the effected teeth can be preserved.

What is involved in the Procedure?

Once you have decided to receive a bone grafting treatment you will first need to have a basic periodontal treatment called scaling and root planning. This process consists of removing plaque and calculus from your gums and teeth down to the roots. Once this has been completed, Dr. White will numb the affected area with a local anesthetic. Upon ensuring that you are comfortable, he will then separate your gum tissue from the roots of your teeth. The roots will be thoroughly cleaned and any holes or defects in your bone tissue will be filled with grafts. These can be made of your own bone, a cadaver’s, a cow’s or synthetic glasses. In most cases, your own bone is most effective.

Once the grafts are in place, the grafted material will be covered with a barrier to protect it while it heals. This barrier will be made from your own skin, cow’s skin or a synthetic material. The gum tissue will be put back in place and stitched. The area may be covered in a bandage or dressing to facilitate proper healing. Over the next six months your body will gradually fill the area with new bone and soft tissue, strengthening the supporting structures around your teeth.
